What You Need To Know About The Mercedes-Benz X-Class Pickup

It is almost a year after the presentation of the study "X-Class Concept" without the actual object on ground. But now Mercedes is ready to build the object for buyers and will be launching the serial version of this pickup in November 2017.

The new X-Class has already been presented. It comes from the cooperation with the Renault Nissan alliance. So she uses the same technology as the Nissan Navara NP 300 and the Renault Alaskan. While in the side view and at the rear the kinship is clearly recognizable, the Mercedes-Benz pick-up occurs completely independently on the front and in the interior. In addition, the Germans promise that there will be an improvement in the chassis and Co. Nevertheless, the X-Class runs together with the Navara at the Nissan factory in Barcelona from the production line.

Design of Mercedes X-Class

Compared to the rather spectacular study, the design was clearly defused. The X-Class is reminiscent of the current Mercedes SUVs. Here you can find the typical grill with double lantern and large central star. The large headlights make the pick-up bullish. Depending on the equipment, the front bumper is completely painted or has large unpainted plastic surfaces. We already know the Silhoutte, including the doorway and the platform, from the Navara. The same also applies to the rear. While the X-Class Concept still has a really cool, continuous luminaire strip and tailpipes integrated into the rear skirt, the standard version has to be satisfied with conventional, vertically arranged taillights and a standard exhaust. Here, the cost factor in particular should have been decisive. Because pick-up buyers - whether private or professional - are quite price-sensitive. Anyone who goes beyond this goal has no chance in the competitive market.

Driving Accessories 

There are also many similarities between the sheet metal. The 3.15-meter-long wheelbase, the steel profile ladder frame, the robust double-wishbone suspension and the heavy-duty five-spoke stiff axle from the Japanese brother. The X-Class, however, relies on a wider track and a more comfortable tuning.The standard comfort gear offers 20 cm of ground clearance. The pick-up might not be quite good for the classy SUV brothers, but for its class it could set standards for driving comfort. Here, the comparison with the VW Amarok is particularly interesting. But the X-Class does not want to be a pure lifestyle vehicle. All variants offer a payload of 1.1 tonnes and a pulling force of 3.5 tonnes. On the bunk you will also find a European palette - also between the wheel arches. 

Furthermore, there is a wide range of practical accessories including a hard top for the loading area. Coil springs and internally ventilated disc brakes are also always included. At the market launch in November 2017, Mercedes offers the X-Class with two 4-cylinder diesel engines. Customers can choose between the X 220 d with 163 hp and the 190 hp strong X 250 d. Again, the kinship with the Navara NP300 shines through, which is offered with exactly the same performance. 

As standard, all X-Classes come with rear-wheel drive and manual six-speed transmission. The four-wheel drive (4Matic) is available at an extra charge for all engines, while the seven-speed automatic is only available for the X 250 d. In mid-2018, however, there is a clear demarcation from the Japanese. Then Mercedes pushes the X 350 d with in-house six-cylinder diesel after.This has a full 258 hp and offers 550 Nm maximum torque. In addition, the top diesel always comes with a permanent all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission. Furthermore, the Dynamic Select with different driving modes is also on board.

Equipment and Interior

Mercedes wants to address the X-Class as large a target group as possible. That's why the pick-up comes in three versions. From work to the lifestyle truck the spectrum is completely covered. The Basic version Pureis deliberately quite robustly designed and is thus suitable for use on construction sites or in forestry. 

The main feature of this variant is the unpainted front apron. The middle equipment line is called Progressive and is already more elegantly designed. Here the front apron is varnished in car color and the comfort equipment is more generous. The top model is called X-Class Power, has chic aluminum rims and a chromed underrun protection. And, of course, there are numerous individualization options for pick-up customers. 

Mercedes offers among other things nine outer colors, different interior designs and several Felgenypen (17 to 19 inches). For the two higher equipment lines is also available a style package with stepboards and an electrically opening rear window. Practical: On all models there is a 12 volt socket and a lighting for the loading area.For easier loading, the tailgate can be opened up to 180 degrees for an extra charge. The rear bumper is omitted.


Looking at the cockpit, Mercedes drivers immediately feel at home - at least when the equipment fits. On request, the X-Class becomes a real noble pick-up, whose cockpit is strongly reminiscent of models such as the GLC. Specifically, there is the attached 8.4 inch monitor, the distinctive control element on the center console, smart instruments and elegant ventilation nozzles. 

The fully networked "Comand Online" system is also available. This offers, among other things, navigation with real-time traffic data, voice control and an integrated hard disk. Of course it can also be operated via the touchpad on the center console. If the permanently installed SIM card is on board, the pick-up is always online. Mercedes also offers features such as a 360-degree camera as well as active braking, tracking assistance and traffic sign detection.


According to Mercedes, the new X-Class will be available in November 2017. First with the two four-cylinder diesels. 

Prices have not yet been revealed. The Mercedes among the pick-ups should be much more expensive than competitors such as Toyota Hilux, FordRanger, Mitsubishi L200, Fiat Fullback, Nissan Navara, Renault Alaskan or Isuzu D-Max. He should be more oriented on the VW-Amarok, which is only available with V6 diesel engines.
