The Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) Champions Rangers International FC have drawn with one of the Algerian representatives, JS Saoura in the 2017 CAF Champions League preliminary round.
The draw took place at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt on Wednesday, 21st December, 2016. The draws for both the preliminary and first rounds were conducted and the fifty-five (55) teams that will partake in the 2017 edition of the most decorated CAF tournament were made to know the club they will be playing in the opening week.
Best on CAF rankings of Clubs that have participated in the CAF Champions League in the previous five years, some clubs were given automatic promotion to first round of the competition. However, the two Nigerian representatives were not favoured by the rankings. Reason being that they have not gathered points from the last five years in the competition. Hence, they are scheduled to play in the preliminary round.
Rangers International FC will travel to Algeria for the first leg of the encounter that is fixed to take place between the weekend of 10th to 12th February, 2017 and the return showdown in the city of Enugu the following weekend of 17th to 19th February, 2017.
If Rangers International FC qualify after the two-legged tie, they will travel to Egypt to play Zamalek in the weekend of 10th to 12th March, 2017, while the return leg will be played at Rangers International Stadium, Enugu in the weekend of 17th to 19th March, 2017. The winner will qualify for the group stage, while the loser will enter CAF Confederation Cup play-off round.
