NPFL 2016 Super Four Tournament - Reports and Results

Match day one in the second round of the Nigerian Professional Football League Super Four Tournament in Uyo began with an encounter between Akwa United and Nasarawa United. Akwa United scored a late goal to win Nasarawa United by a goal to nil. In the other fixture of the day, Warri Wolves FC were beaten 1 - 0 by the League Champions, Enyimba FC.

Match day 2 of the second of NPFL Super Four produced another shocker as Nasarawa United returned to the summit of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Super Four log on Wednesday after an enthralling 2-1 victory over league champions, Enyimba FC at the Nest of Champions (Godswill International Stadium), Uyo.

The Solid Miners had momentarily relinquished their leadership spot after conceding a last gasp goal against Akwa United on Monday but a late Tayo Fabiyi strike proved decisive in their Match Day 5 contest with Enyimba who had centre-back Ifeanyi Anaemena sent off on the hour mark.

Nasarawa United almost went ahead on seven minutes but after a flowing team move, former Enyimba striker Abdulrahman Bashir somehow managed to scoff his effort wide with an open goal at his mercy. Enyimba also had their almost moment two minutes to the break but Christian Pyagbara fired wide with Nasarawa goalkeeper Danladi Umar already wrong-footed.

The second half however provided more action and United got the day's curtain raiser from the penalty spot after Ifeanyi Anaemena's tackle from behind against Tayo Fabiyi. The defender was sent off for his indiscretion while his opposite number, Seun Sogbeso calmly slotted home.

Enyimba replied almost instantly as Pyagbara profited from some atrocious defending by United to poke home Joseph Osadiaye's free kick. United were however not to be denied their maximum points as former Sharks striker, Fabiyi finished to the bottom right corner from the centre of the box to send his team back on top with eight points.

In the day's late kick-off, ten-man Warri Wolves continued to struggle in front of their opponents' goal but managed to carve out a goalless draw against tournament's hosts Akwa United.

Chances were few and far between at both ends as both teams huffed and puffed for the most parts of the encounter. The game's highlight was Wolves defender, Semiu Liadi's dismissal in second half stoppage time for a second bookable offence.

Akwa United remain second on the log and are still unbeaten at the Nest of Champions in Uyo (in all competitions) as they look forward to a date with Enyimba on Friday in the last match of the Super Four tournament on Friday night. While Nasarawa United will entertain Warri Wolves FC in the early kickoff match scheduled on the same day.
