Akwa United FC Extends Their Winning Form By beating Vita Club De Mokanda Of DR Congo In Pointe Noire

Akwa United FC in the euphoria of being the Champions of the Nigerian Federation Cup and Champions of the recently concluded Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) Super Four Tournament in Uyo got their first ever appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup off with a stunning display against the Vita Club De Mokanda Of DR Congo.

The Uyo based team produced a scintillating performance to claim a 1 - 0 victory against the DR Congo football club in a 13500 capacity STADE MUNICIPAL DE POINTE-NOIRE on Saturday, 13th February, 2016. Stade Municipal de Pointe-Noire was opened in 2006.

Akwa United's new-signing and returnee, Ubong Ekpai, scored the winning goal to ensure that the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club return to their home in Uyo with a goal advantage ahead of the return leg in a fortnight at Godswill International Stadium (Nest of Champions), Uyo.

Ubong Ekpai was one of four new signings named in the startlist of Akwa United by head coach Maurice Cooreman for their maiden appearance on the continent. Kufre Ebong, Emeka Isaac and Michael Okoro Ibe were the others.

The Promise Keepers (Akwa United) had the odds stacked against them before kickoff, but pulled through a first half lead.

Ekpai scored the solitary goal of the contest with eight minutes to the break after a sweeping move.

The Nigerian club were peppered by Vita Club for longer spells and would have their goalkeeper Olufemi Kayode to thank for his agility, jump power and sharp reflexes between the sticks.

However, there was late drama inside the Stade Municipal de Pointe-Noire when Akwa United defender Samuel Okon was sent off.

The numerical disadvantage was not enough to deny The Promise Keepers a winning start in their first appearance in a Caf club competition.

Akwa United will play hosts to Vita Club at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, also known as the Nest of Champions, in Uyo on the 27th of February, 2016 by 5:00PM Nigerian time.

Meanwhile, the NPFL second representative in the CAF Confederation Cup will kickoff their campaign tomorrow at home by 4:00PM against the visiting Generation Foot of Senegal.

NPFL Champions, Enyimba FC started their CAF Champions League journey by losing away from home to Vipers of Uganda. Warri Wolves FC will play at home against Sporting Praia Cruz of São Tomé e Príncipe tomorrow by 4:00PM.
