Manchester United Beats Real Madrid In International Champions Cup

The European Champion is back in business after the Champions League final in Cardiff, a month and a half ago, Real Madrid faced Manchester United in California on the occasion of the International Champions Cup. After a boring match, Manchester United finally imposed themselves after a penalty shootout marked by countless misses.

The International Champions Cup was held at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and was a friendly competition with the most prestigious teams on the planet. Real Madrid, who was back on the pitch, were taking on Manchester United, the last winner of the Europa League, as a repeat of the European Supercup in Macedonia on 8 August. Defeated Zinedine Zidane of Spain, U21 and Cristiano Ronaldo, however, could still count on the backbone that made the Liga Champions League double last season. Behind, Navas occupied the cage, also defended by Marcelo, Carvajal, Varna and Nacho. The latter replaced Sergio Ramos, arrived late in the United States and on the bench at kick-off. In the middle, Casemiro was also left to rest and Kroos and Modric evolved alongside Isco. In front Gareth Bale made his return, accompanied by Lucas Vazquez and the great Karim Benzema.

For his part, Manchester United approached this appointment serenely, after having already played three games during this preseason. The team led by former merengue technician José Mourinho had already beaten LA Galaxy (2-5), Real Salt Lake (1-2) and Manchester City (2-0) in the last seven days. Both Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelöf started on the bench, as did Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and David De Gea.The Portuguese teenager gave Andreas Pereira, a 21-year-old midfielder in the middle of the field, while Anthony Martial was lined up on the left side of the attack with Jessie Lingard and Marcus Rashford. The defense and midfield of the Red Devils were solid, with the presence of Carrick, new captain of Manchester United, Fellaini, Bailly, Jones and Darmian. Fosu-Mensah completed the defense, while Sergio Romero started in goal.

If the meeting had, on paper, the flavour of the European Cup, on the field the debates were of a totally different taste. Dispatched under a blazing sun, the encounter never really took off in the first act. Gareth Bale had to worry Sergio Romero within six yards, placing his head on a center of Karim Benzema, but the Argentinian goalkeeper was the quickest and cleared his fists (5th). In the aftermath, Jesse Lingard, after a good service by Anthony Martial, responded by firing a twenty-meter strike that forced Keylor Navas to fly on his left (8th). And then the distracted spectators of the Levi's Stadium were able to rest their eyes for more than half an hour, as the show offered by the twenty-two actors was dull and tasteless. As we headed towards half-time, Anthony Martial, from his left side, attempted and managed a soloist number, avoiding Lucas Vazquez, staring and dismantling Dani Carvajal, leaving marble Raphael Varane and on the tile Luka Modric, in an improvised dance inside the box before serving Jesse Lingard, who only had to push the ball into the empty goal (1-0, 45 '+1). At the break, Manchester led on the smaller of the margins.

At the break, the two coaches gave the broadcasters a chill by almost altering their eleven. Eleven new players on the Real side, with the first appearance of Theo Hernandez. In Manchester, José Mourinho kept on the meadow only Matteo Darmian, Marouane Fellaini and Anthony Martial. Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku made their entry. After trampling the lawn for five short minutes, Ander Herrera asked for the change, complaining of the ribs. The match resumed on the same slow pace as in the first act. Twenty minutes from the end, it was Theo Hernandez who allowed Real Madrid to return to the game. After being thrown into the depth, the left-hander transferred from Atlético for nearly 30 million euros spoke his speed and caused a penalty against Victor Lindelof. Casemiro undertook to transform the sentence into force (1-1, 69'). Behind, the Red Devils made more and more mistakes and Luis Miguel Quezada surprised his whole world by striking a free-kick directly, though out of the way, at the entrance to the surface. David De Gea saved his own against his post (72'). Opportunities were rare, it was not until the 83rd minute to see a real opportunity, but Fellaini, however, alone in the centre position, missed his recovery, perfectly served by the young McTominay, with very promising right foot.

Manchester United, the least awkward on penalties

Nothing was scored and a dantesque penalty shoot-out came between the two teams. The light went to the two guards, David De Gea and Kiko Casilla. After four shots, none had been transformed. David De Gea stopping the attempts of Kovacic and Oscar. Anthony Martial sending his shot into the clouds and Kiko Casilla averting the shot from McTominay. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Quezada were going to unlock the clock (1-1), before Lindelof did not move his shot on Casilla, who had not moved and that Theo Hernandez did not shoot for Real. It was finally Daley Blind who was going to offer the victory to the Red Devils, transforming the third shot of this session, before Casemiro sends a missile on the bar. Anecdotal victory, but still victory for Manchester United, which continues its summer harvest, with a fourth victory of rank. The Red Devils will face FC Barcelona on Wednesday, while Real Madrid will face Manchester City on Thursday for their second game of preparation.
