Cristiano Ronaldo Reveals Why Messi Took His Unusual Penalty

Cristiano Ronaldo appears to be a little irked by Lionel Messi’s penalty against Celta Vigo - and the Real Madrid superstar struggled to hide his frustration in a press conference on Tuesday evening.

Rather than shooting at goal, Messi opted to pass to Luis Suarez who converted his hat-trick and, more importantly, his 23rd La Liga goal of the season - putting him two clear of Ronaldo in the race for the Pichichi.

Cristiano told journalists that he knows why Messi opted to pass instead of shoot but wouldn’t elaborate any further. However, it doesn’t take a mind-reader to work out why the ultra-competitive Ronaldo was feeling perturbed by the incident.

“I know why Messi took the penalty like that and I'm not saying anything else,” the three-time Ballon d’Or winner was quoted as saying by Catalan newspaper Sport. “Think what you want.”

Had Messi, who only has 13 La Liga goals to his name this term after missing two months with a knee injury, opted to score then Suarez would only be one goal ahead of Ronaldo in the race for La Liga’s top scorer award.

Ronaldo then took a dig at Barcelona’s ‘MSN’ - Messi, Suarez and Neymar - claiming what happens on the pitch is more important than the fact they're all good friends off it.

“The meals, hugs and little kisses don't mean anything,” the Portuguese superstar added , “what's important is what happens on the pitch.”

The MSN would argue that their fantastic friendship is one of the reasons why they’ve been so successful over the past 12 months.

Ronaldo doesn’t hide the fact that he always wants to score goals and the 31-year-old will be desperate to add another Pichichi to his collection.

The former Manchester United star has won La Liga’s top scorer award on three occasions - 2011, 2014 and 2015 - the same tally as Messi.

But it seems Ronaldo is a little concerned that Messi, knowing that he is now unlikely to finish as the top scorer in the Spanish top flight, will do everything in his power to help Suarez beat his rival to the coveted individual accolade.

Nothing would irritate Ronaldo more, one suspects, than if Suarez is put on penalty duty for Barcelona between now and the end of the season.

Celta Vigo succumbed to a 6 - 1 defeat at Camp Nou with Messi scoring the opening goal in the 28 minutes and John Guidetti leveling it in the 39 minutes for a draw in halftime. Barcelona scored 5 goals in the second half of the game with 3 goals coming from Luis Suarez, and a goal from Ivan Rakitic and Neymar respectively.
