Akwa United FC of Uyo in the euphoria of victory currently spreading all over Akwa Ibom State secured their cup double by winning the Nigerian Professional Football League Super Four Tournament 2015/2016.

The came into the tournament as Federation Cup winners after defeating Lobi Stars to cling on the trophy.

The Super Four tournament started on the 20th of January, 2016 with two fixtures played on the opening day at Kaduna. Warri Wolves FC defeated Akwa United FC 1 - 0 to ensure that they are unbeaten in the last four outings with Akwa United FC. The second game of the day was an encounter between the NPL Champions, Enyimba FC of Aba and Nasarawa United FC being the third (3rd) place team in the just concluded Nigerian football season. It ended in a 1 - 1 draw.

Match day 2 fixtures were played on the 22nd of January, 2016. Akwa United FC beat Enyimba FC by a goal to nil. While Nasarawa United vs Warri Wolves ended in favour of Nasarawa United.

Match day 3 fixtures (24th January, 2016) witnessed a goalless draw in the match between Akwa United vs Nasarawa United. Enyimba FC vs Warri Wolves produced three goals with Enyimba claiming a 2 - 1 victory.

Match day 4 in the second round of the Nigerian Professional Football League Super Four Tournament were played in Uyo on the 1st of February, 2016. It began with an encounter between Akwa United and Nasarawa United. Akwa United scored a late goal to win Nasarawa United by a goal to nil. In the other fixture of the day, Warri Wolves FC were beaten 1 - 0 by the League Champions, Enyimba FC.

Match day 5 of the NPFL Super Four produced another shocker as Nasarawa United returned to the summit of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Super Four log on Wednesday 3rd February, 2016 after an enthralling 2-1 victory over league champions, Enyimba FC at the Nest of Champions (Godswill International Stadium), Uyo. Akwa United played out a barren draw in the other fixture.

Match day 6 played on the 5th of February, 2016, produced the winner of the tournament. Warri Wolves FC prevented Nasarawa United from winning the trophy by being victorious in their last match of the competition. They won by a goal to nothing. Akwa United FC needed a draw to claim the trophy and they played out a goalless draw with Enyimba FC.

Meanwhile, the NPFL super four tournament is used as a near perfect warm-up for the contenders for continental competitions, it can be generally accepted that it has lived up to its billing.

In the recent past, kicking off the Nigerian league season after the continental campaign had started has been faulted as one of the reasons Nigerian teams look ill-prepared and hence get knocked out of the competitions even before they get started. Perhaps in the future the local league timetable could get adjusted, as the Nigerian football setup keeps improving, so it suits these continental needs but citing that as an excuse especially to the NPFL faithful expectant of a good run on the continent, is fast becoming stale.

Akwa United FC will be playing in the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time. Their first match in the tournament will be played against the Vita Club of DR Congo on Saturday 13th of February, 2016 by 5pm.

Congrats to Akwa United FC for their Super Four Tournament Success!
