See What Is Happening In The City

It has been a week of rainy days and I decided to take a drive around the city of Uyo in the southern part of Nigeria.
Uyo is a beautiful city that is endow with natural vegetation and tourist centres built for the comfort of the people residing in the area and those of the visitors from other states and countries.

Business tycoons were busy doing their businesses. Tricycles and Taxi-car drivers hustling for passengers by the road side with their conductors doing what they know how to do best. Vulcanizers waiting for flat tyres for treats, as well as, filling it with air. Sachet water (commonly called pure water) hawkers were hardly seen trekking along the way because of the weather.

It was sunny in the morning from the tenth hours, and I left my home town heading to Uyo. All of a sudden it feels too cold, and up in the sky it is cloudy. This experience signifies that there is something serious that is going to happen.

Hence, it was a thunderstorm. That is a storm consisting of thunder and lightning produced by a cloud with a tall structure and a flat base, usually accompanied with heavy rain, wind, and sometimes hail, and in rarer cases sleet, freezing rain, or snow.

At the actual instance where the thunderstorm arises, the disposition of the parts of the city's shape was altered. Traders seen running helter-skelter to their shops. Those that were already in the shops observed to be bringing together their goods inside the store to prevent spoilage.

Passers-by increasing their footsteps to the maximum possible distance of that which can fit in the length of their legs. Those with short legs were seen striving for the speed to cover the gap created by their counterparts (passers-by) with long legs. Unfortunately, they were not able to eliminate the difference between their positions. Running was adopted as the best means to get rid of the gab.

Immediately, the flood gates of heaven were opened. The condensed water from the cloud started to drop. Hence, it was a heavy rainfall strong enough to hit on top of the car I boarded as if it were small stones being thrown on the car roof. This causes some people to feel baffled.

Car owners with the learner's labels were sighted inside their motionless cars parked by the road side. Petty traders, that is, those that practice socioeconomic activity that serves the low income earners in the city, were soaked in the rain. There was no provision of coverage from the rain drops.

John Ruskin once said that "sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather".

The heavy rain of that day is nowhere to be considered as refreshing, rather it can be referred to as bad weather. This is because all the channels (gutters, culverts, etc) for waste water to flow were already filled due to the previous rain drops.

Therefore, every nooks and crannies were waterlogged (filled and flooded with water). It rises to a level that motorways and highways were converted to cargo ships travel path.

The whole land submerged by water as if there was an overflow of water from the Atlantic Ocean. The aftermath of this, is the damage to some structures including motorways which its impregnable property is weakened. This results in port-holes on the road,  which in turn reduces the comfort of moving on a smooth road.
