IPP To Produce 685 Megawatts of Power

The Ibom Power Plant (IPP) is set to generate more megawatts of power.
The Akwa Ibom State Government under the leadership of Governor Udom Emmanuel is determined to ensure that there is availability of power in all the communities of the state. This determination has been given a boost with the granting of License to Ibom Power Plant to upgrade its capacity to generate electricity.

Governor Udom Emmanuel received the amended Power Generation license of Ibom Power Plant today in Abuja from NERC Chairman, Mr. Sam Amado.

NERC which is an abbreviation for Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission is an independent regulatory body with authority for the regulation of the electric power industry in Nigeria. NERC was formed in October 31st, 2005 under the Obasanjo administration's economic reform agenda through the Electric Power Sector Reform Act, 2005 for formation and review of electricity tariffs, transparent policies regarding subsidies, promotion of policies that are efficient and environmentally friendly, and also including forming and enforcing of standards in the creation and use of electricity in Nigeria. NERC was instituted primarily to regulate the tariff of Power Generating companies owned or controlled by the government, and any other generating company which has a license for power generation and transmission of energy, and distribution of electricity.

The NERC's powers and duties are provided for in the Electric Power Systems Research Act 2005 (EPSRAct 2005), and effectively ushered the privatization of electric power services in Nigeria, unbundling of the defunct National Electricity Power Authority (NEPA) now referred to as the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). NERC’s primary duty is to protect the interests of consumers, issue licenses to operators/investors, set and review electricity tariffs and where possible promote competition. The Commission's main objective is to protect existing and future consumers' interests in relation to electricity generated and that conveyed by distribution or transmission systems.

Consumers' interests are their interests taken as a whole, including their interests in affordable tariffs, and safe, reliable and available electricity supply, and the reduction of greenhouse gases to them.

During an interactive session with the members of the state House of Assembly, the state Governor Mr Udom Emmanuel had dropped the hint on the expansion of IPP generation capacity to the honourable members of the house who called on him at the Government House, Uyo last week.

The Governor stated that the License would increase power generation in the Ibom Power Plant from one hundred and ninety one to six hundred and eighty five megawatts. This according to the Governor would record an improvement in power supply currently enjoyed in the state.

Megawatts are used to measure the output of a power plant or the amount of electricity required by an entire city. One Megawatts is equivalent to 1000 Kilowatt, which is equal to 1,000,000 Watts.

Therefore, the Ibom Power Plant will produce 685,000,000 Watts which is the corresponding figure for 685 Megawatts of electricity.
